From its beginnings in the 1930s as ‘the people’s automobile’ focused on appealing price and functionality for the masses, the Volkswagen Type 1 – affectionately referred to as ‘the Beetle’ – was a practical and efficient feather-weight car for the discerning family, and is still cherished by many devout followers even today. First released in late-2020, the all-electric ID.4 aims to channel this spirit as it takes to the roads of the world. Described by one of Volkswagen’s executives, the ID.4 “…drives like a GTI, has the packaging of a Tiguan, and the purpose of the Beetle”, and it is proving to be successful with notable accolades, such as and World Car of the Year for 2021.
Entirely new and solely designed with battery-powered propulsion in-mind, the ‘Intelligent Design’ of the ID.4 is admirably revolutionary, practical, and appealing to the discerning buyer. Similar to the original Beetle, the first ID.4’s on sale had a single electric motor positioned in the rear of the car and powering only the rear wheels – though subsequent ID.4’s are now offered with dual motors and AWD. The single-motor RWD model has an impressive all-electric driving range of 330km and can reach 100km/h from standstill in under 8.0-seconds, while the dual-motor AWD model is capable of an all-electric driving range of 405 km and can go from 0-100km/h in under 6.0-seconds.
