Subaru STI Hatchback Concept | Why Not Build It?
Concept cars often represent a manufacturer’s boldest ideas – the vehicles that could be made without the necessities of emissions standards, production limitations, safety regulations, and market demand. So when Subaru unveiled two new STI concept cars at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, the immediate question from enthusiasts was simple – ‘Why are these not in production?’
One of the models leans fully into a ‘what if?’ future scenario – an EV with dramatic styling that feels more Hot Wheels than production-ready. But the second concept raised eyebrows for a different reason – it is an internal-combustion STI hatchback that looks surprisingly feasible to manufacture and sell. Named the Performance B-STI, the gas-powered concept is built on the current-generation Impreza hatch, it builds-upon the WRX with additional lighting, purposeful fender flares, and proudly showcases a manual transmission. It is everything fans have been asking for – a unashamed reintroduction of the famed STI nameplate, with the added desirability of being a hatchback.
Almost every element on this former concept car already exists elsewhere in Subaru’s lineup, save for the engine which Subaru remains tight-lipped about. So what might be stopping them? With seemingly few barriers standing in the way, and a passionate audience ready to cheer it on, we cannot help but wonder if Subaru might follow the lead of brands like Toyota, who famously brought its Lexus luxury brand’s revered LC500 to life after overwhelming fan demand.
Here is hoping this Subaru STI concept does not stay a concept for long. In the meantime, contact Subaru of Nanaimo for information about the current lineup and information of upcoming models.
