An Education in Speed

Motorsport enthusiasts will tell you that while some things can be learned in the classroom, there are elements that simply must be learned on the asphalt. Students of the UVIC Formula Motorsport team are doing just that, meeting in UVic’s Engineering and Computer Science Building and in their workshop to design and build a small open wheel formula style car. They compete in the world’s largest collegiate design competition, Formula SAE, and currently rank Best Western Canadian Team and 7th overall in Canada.
The Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit was pleased to welcome the team and their car for a few test laps around the track, followed by some skidpad and acceleration tests in our dynamic driving area. While testing the car design is key, the students are acquiring lessons in engineering theory, business and relations, hands-on design, and manufacturing throughout the process. We wish them the best of luck in this years competition, and hope to see them back at the circuit!
