Circuit Fleet Spotlight | Brilliant BRZ
Subaru is perhaps the only vehicle manufacturer synonymous with ‘All Wheel Drive’ (AWD). Starting in the mid-1990’s, all Subarus sold in Canada and the United States were solely available with AWD. Specifically Subaru’s trademark Symmetrical All Wheel Drive system, exclusive to Subaru and made possible due to the flat-engine layout of their engines, also known as a boxer engine. In the mid-2000’s, Subaru began a budding relationship with automotive giant Toyota, and this eventually culminated into a grand highlight in 2012.
A special anomaly to the brand’s AWD-only reputation, the rear wheel drive Subaru BRZ made its debut to great fanfare. Short for Boxer, Rear Wheel Drive, Zenith; the BRZ was developed with driver engagement at its forefront. Its relative light mass, front-mounted 2.0-litre 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, and rear wheel drive made for a dynamically approachable and affordable car for driving enthusiasts of all ages. The development team even thought to give the BRZ enough interior space to fit four full-sized tires behind the two front seats – perfect for track days and swapping stickier tires on to set faster lap times!
In 2022, Subaru comprehensively revised the BRZ for its second generation. Engine displacement was increased from 2.0-lires to 2.4-litres, ensuring a noticeable increase in power and torque – now 228 bhp and 250 Nm of torque compared to the first generation’s 205 bhp and 212 Nm respectively. The chassis and suspension were adjusted to keep-up with the larger engine, and the interior and exterior received new designs, all while honoring the dynamics and driving feel the first generation BRZ had become so renowned and revered for. We are excited to welcome two new BRZs to our fleet, their proven abilities and prioritizing the driver’s experience make them a perfect fit for tackling the 19-corners of Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit.
