On May 19-21, the Victoria Day Speedfest Weekend initiated the 2017 season for the IMSA Ultra 94 GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama. It put Team Porsche Centre Victoria and veteran driver Pieter Baljet against semi-professional drivers racing head to head in one of the largest single-make series in North America.
Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit with Porsche Centre Victoria is thrilled to sponsor and have Circuit member Pieter Baljet race the 2017 991 GT3 against veteran drivers including 2014 Cup Champion Scott Hargrove of Surrey, BC. Pieter’s time on Island Circuit has certainly helped in preparing for this series and we’re excited to see him in the challenge ahead.
Although Pieter didn’t take the checkered flag this past weekend, he was only seconds behind the leader with Pieter’s best time of 1:22.600 earning him seven valuable challenge points. His experience and patience behind the wheel will certainly tally more points to the year-long challenge, bring awareness about our Circuit where he trains while demonstrating the skills of west coast motorsport drivers.
The GT3 Cup Challenge is a development series for many drivers who are ambitious in moving into Porsche Super Cup or the American Le Mans Series. Passionate racers or enthusiasts can appreciate what the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit brings to this part of the world, preparing next-generation drivers into an exciting modern motorsport arena.
We want to congratulate Team Porsche Centre Victoria and Pieter Baljet for their opening weekend performance and wish them luck towards the rest of the season.
